Psalm 68:9: You, O God, sent a plentiful rain, whereby You confirmed Your inheritance, when it was weary.
There’s nothing like a drought to make you appreciate the value of water. For those of you who live in parts of the world where rain is a consistent part of the climate, you likely don’t worry about things like droughts. However, for those that live in more arid areas, water is a precious commodity. Therefore, where you choose to live physically has a bearing on how plentiful water is.
The same can be said of where you choose to live spiritually. Today’s verse tells us God “sent a plentiful rain”. By “plentiful”, we can assume this means He sent a more than sufficient amount of water to sustain the life that needs the rain. Are you spiritually dry? Do you feel like you can just fall back into the loving arms of Jesus like you fall back into a pool of refreshing water when you’re dry and hot? Or are you relentlessly thirsty – constantly seeking something to quench your need, but you keep coming up empty?
Just as it is in the physical world, water is life-giving in the spiritual world. Jesus said in John 4:14, “but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” He later says in John 7:38′ “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
That water that Jesus promises to those who believe in Him is totally satisfying (you will never [spiritually] thirst). His water He gives is like “a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” Jesus’ water not only gives life to His believers, but it flows out of their hearts to give life to others. According to today’s verse, Who is the source of physical water? – God. He is also the source of the spiritual water Jesus is talking about – in the form of the Holy Spirit.
Not only is the Holy Spirit the plentiful source of our spiritual water, but also He is the confirmation of our inheritance as children of God through our faith in Christ. Ephesians 1:13-14a says, “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance.”
Are you weary? Do you have a thirst that cannot be quenched? Do you keep looking for things or people to satisfy you – but you keep coming up empty or unfulfilled? There is hope for you – there is life-giving, soul-satisfying water that never runs dry which is available if you come to believe Jesus Christ is God, He died for your sins, and He was resurrected for the sole purpose to give you a new life – through the gift of the Holy Spirit. He’s your guarantee of eternal life at peace with God. He will become your best friend, and He will always have a drink of the water Jesus is promising. His cup is there for the taking – will you take it?
